Lobo Unity, an Elsie Allen High School grassroots’ organization, invites you to participate in our fifth annual LOBO CommUNITY Fair on Sunday, May 20, 2012, from 1:00-4:00 p.m. at Elsie Allen High School. This fair is a family-oriented, community event intended to strengthen relationships amongst Santa Rosa’s community members. Just to give you a glimpse of our success, last year’s fair included over 1,500 guests; 62 booths featuring city and government agencies, nonprofits, private businesses, several local school organizations; and various forms of entertainment including a professional band, a petting farm, and Santa Rosa Book Mobile and an art show.

The grassroots organization of LOBO UNITY was created in the spring of 2008 by staff and students. Since then parents, community members, non-profit agencies, businesses, and city/county agencies have joined Lobo Unity in the mutual effort to create stronger, healthier relationships in our communty.

In order to build community connections, a free, family oriented Lobo CommUnity fair was started in 2008.  Since then, the fair has grown from fifty attendees to one thousand five hundred in 2011. Over sixty booths hosted by various city government branches, private businesses, non-profit agencies, Elsie Allen High School clubs, and Southwest Santa Rosa feeder schools participate providing informational material, food, games, and live entertainment. Applications for our fifth annual 2012 Lobo CommUnity Fair are open to the public and can be found here.
Another event created to bring communty members togther was the 2009 Tamale Togetherness in which a dozen students and their mothers taught paying community members how to make tamales from scratch.  Fifty participants left with their very own dozen homemade tamales, recipe cards, and a full stomach!  Students and their parent tamale teachers shared a special moment working together and felt extreme pride in sharing their Latino tradition.

In addition, Lobo Unity wrote a 2011 Community Improvement Grant and was awarded $1,000.00 from the City of Santa Rosa to put on Dinner and a Movie in the Park.  We are currently in the planning stages for this fall 2012 event taking place at Hearn Park.

In addition to inviting the community on to our Elsie Allen High School campus, students volunteer in the community at various city and county events and for several no-profit agencies.  For the past two years, over 200 students have volunteered at the Santa Rosa Neighborhood Summit, Gran Fondo Bike Race, Fiesta de Independencia, Roseland Holiday Celebration, Youth Summit, Ecology Corp Creek Restoration, Roseland Cinco de Mayo, and the MLK Day just to name a few.  Many also volunteer on a regular basis tutoring for Cal Serves and Community Action Partnership.

More and more community members are recognizing the commitment Lobo Unity students are making to our community, and students are realizing the positive impact they make every day.  Little by little, Lobo Unity is creating positive relationships and making a tremendous impact on our community.
